SIM lock, network lock, carrier lock: what the lock means, how to check it and how to unlock your phone legally and permanently.
A SIM lock (also network lock or carrier lock) ties a phone to a specific carrier. The device then only accepts SIM cards from that provider. Such locks usually come from subsidised devices in mobile contracts. If you want to unlock, first check the status – then take the correct, legal route.
Before doing anything, check via IMEI whether a SIM lock exists at all and which carrier the device is tied to. This saves time and protects you from unnecessary costs – many devices are long since unlocked without the owner knowing.
On the iPhone, unlocking happens exclusively through the carrier the device is tied to. The provider records the release directly against the IMEI in Apple's database. After activation it's usually enough to update the iPhone or briefly reset it – the lock is then gone permanently, without codes or software.
On Android devices, unlocking is often done with an unlock code (NCK) provided by the carrier. You enter it as soon as you insert a foreign SIM. Here too, the official route via the provider is the safest – the code is tied to the device's IMEI.
In Germany: after the contractual minimum term, the carrier generally has to unlock the device on request free of charge. Unlocking is often possible before that too, sometimes for a fee. A short call or a request in the customer portal is usually enough.
Be careful with dubious third parties promising 'instant unlocking' for any model. Reputable unlocks go through the official manufacturer and provider databases. Providers working with software hacks or jailbreaks risk an unstable device, and the lock can return after an update.
After unlocking, a quick re-check pays off: insert a SIM from another provider – the device should connect without issues. Alternatively, check the SIM-lock status again via IMEI. Only when both show 'unlocked' can you use the phone freely with any SIM worldwide.
