iCloud Activation Lock: detect, check and remove it legally

What Activation Lock (Find My iPhone) is, how to check it before buying and remove it legally – plus a clear warning about bypass scams.
The iCloud Activation Lock is one of Apple's most important security features – and at the same time the most common trap when buying a used iPhone. It activates automatically as soon as Find My is on, tying the device firmly to the owner's Apple ID.
Concretely: after a reset, the iPhone can only be set up again if you know the original Apple ID and password. A device with an active lock is therefore useless to a new owner – no matter how good it looks. That's exactly why such devices often appear cheaply on the used market.
Before buying, the safest way to check the status is an IMEI or serial-number lookup of the Find My iPhone status. Add the hands-on test: during setup the iPhone must show the normal welcome screen and must not ask for an unknown Apple ID. If it does, the lock is active.
Important: Activation Lock is not the same as a blacklist entry. An iPhone can be 'clean' on the blacklist and still be iCloud-locked – or vice versa. For a safe purchase you should always check both.
Only the original owner can remove the lock legally. They sign the device out of their account via appleid.apple.com or in the Find My app – this even works remotely, without having the device in hand. Only then is the iPhone free for a new owner.
Stay away from offers that 'bypass' or 'remove' an Activation Lock. Such services are usually scams, technically unstable or outright illegal – and frequently involve stolen devices anyway. Never pay for a supposed iCloud bypass.
If you've accidentally bought a locked iPhone, contact the seller and ask them to remove it from their account – it costs them nothing and takes a minute. If they don't respond, the only option left is reversing the purchase. So: better check beforehand than regret it afterwards.
