Every phone has a unique 15-digit IMEI number. Dial *#06# on the keypad to display it. You can also find it in the settings – on iPhone under “General → About”, on Android under “About phone” – or on the original packaging. That number is all you need to start the check above.

The IMEI identifies the device itself, not the subscription. It stays the same no matter which SIM card is inserted – which is exactly why it reveals the true state of a device, regardless of what the seller claims.
