Refurbished or used? Differences, risks and tips

Refurbished, reconditioned or simply used – the differences, the risks, and how to protect yourself when buying.
'Refurbished', 'reconditioned', 'like new' or simply 'used' – the terms sound similar but mean different things. Knowing the difference helps you make the better decision when buying a smartphone and avoid paying more than necessary.
Refurbished or reconditioned means a used device has been professionally tested, cleaned, repaired if needed and restored to like-new condition – usually by a dealer or certified refurbisher. There is often a warranty and a verified feature set. Classic 'used', by contrast, means: sold as-is, without reconditioning, often privately.
Refurbished devices are usually graded by condition (e.g. 'very good', 'good', 'acceptable'). These mainly refer to cosmetic wear – the technology is usually fully functional. Private sales have no such grades; here only what you check yourself counts.
An important legal difference: dealers must provide a warranty even on used and refurbished devices (at least one year in Germany). In private sales the warranty is usually excluded – you buy at your own risk. That is often reflected in the price.
Caution: whether refurbished or privately used – no label automatically protects against a locked or stolen device. Even a 'reconditioned' iPhone can in theory have an iCloud lock or a blacklist entry if the refurbisher doesn't work cleanly. The IMEI check doesn't replace a label – and no label replaces the IMEI check.
How to protect yourself: get the IMEI or serial number and check blacklist status, iCloud lock, model and warranty. With dealers, look for a transparent condition description, warranty and right of return. For private purchases, the full used-buying checklist applies – including a function test and a reset in front of you.
Bottom line: refurbished is usually the safer but slightly pricier choice with a warranty; privately used is cheaper but demands more of your own checking. In both cases the IMEI check is the fastest way to expose a risky offer before you spend money.
