Selling Your Own Phone Safely: Wipe Data, Sign Out, Keep Proof

Anyone selling their old smartphone hands over not just hardware but potentially personal data and account links too. A clean process protects your privacy and prevents the buyer from later facing a locked device. The following steps apply in principle to both iPhone and Android; the menu names differ somewhat between systems. Set aside time for this deliberately — afterwards, much can only be corrected remotely, or not at all.
Back up your data first, before you delete anything. On the iPhone an iCloud or a local backup is a good option, on Android the Google backup or a copy to your computer. Then check whether the backup is really complete — especially photos, messages and credentials from the password store. Only once you are sure that nothing important will be lost should you begin signing out and resetting.
The most important and most frequently overlooked step: sign out of your accounts before you reset the device. On the iPhone that means signing out of your Apple ID and turning off Find My so that the activation lock is released. On Android you remove your Google account to clear Factory Reset Protection (FRP). If you forget this, the buyer cannot set up the device after the reset — it stays tied to your account.
Deal with SIM and eSIM. Remove a physical SIM card and, if used, delete the eSIM profile on the device — bear in mind that you will then have to reactivate your number with your carrier on another device. Also remove the device from your mobile account if it is listed there. This prevents connection data or phone numbers from accidentally staying attached to the old device.
Only now comes the factory reset: Erase All Content and Settings on the iPhone, Factory data reset on Android. Modern devices are encrypted by default, so a full reset makes the data practically unreadable — separate overwriting is not necessary on current hardware. Let the process finish completely and then briefly start the device to confirm that the setup assistant appears without asking for an account.
Finally, check your accounts remotely. In the Apple ID or Google account device list, confirm that the sold device no longer appears, and remove it manually if it does. Unpair connected accessories such as a smartwatch or headphones. If you forgot to sign out, on some systems the activation lock can still be released remotely via the device list — the sooner, the better.
A short piece of documentation helps the sale go smoothly. Note the IMEI, serial number and condition, keep proof of ownership such as the original invoice at hand, and write a simple handover note with the date. An IMEI status check before the sale shows the buyer that the device is not locked and protects both sides.
