eSIM and EID: What Changes for Device Identification

Why the eSIM brings its own identifier while the IMEI still identifies the device.
More and more smartphones rely on the eSIM, meaning a built-in rather than a removable SIM card. In the trade this raises a fair question: does this change how a device is identified? The short answer is no, but the eSIM introduces an additional identifier that should not be confused with the IMEI. This article separates the terms cleanly and shows what matters when checking and recording eSIM devices.
Technically the eSIM is an eUICC, an embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card. Instead of swapping a card, you load a so-called operator profile onto this permanently soldered chip. An eUICC can store several profiles and switch between them, and profiles can be deleted and reinstalled. The chip itself stays unchanged in the device. This very separation of a swappable profile and a fixed chip is the key to understanding the identifiers.
Every eUICC chip carries its own unchangeable identifier: the EID, the eUICC Identifier. It consists of 32 decimal digits and identifies the eSIM hardware itself, not the phone and not the mobile subscription. The EID is needed when installing a profile so the operator system knows which chip to deliver the profile to. On many devices the EID can be shown in the settings under the SIM or device information.
The IMEI is unaffected by all this. It still marks the radio module and therefore the device, regardless of whether a physical SIM, an eSIM or no SIM at all is present. You can remember the roles like this: the IMEI answers which device, the EID answers which SIM chip, and the profile answers which subscription. For blocklist and provenance checks, the IMEI is and remains the decisive number.
One point often causes confusion in practice: devices that use a physical SIM and an eSIM in parallel have two radio identities and therefore two IMEIs. This is not a fault but a matter of design. When read out via *#06# or in the device information, both 15-digit numbers then appear. When recording in a system, it should be clear which IMEI counts as the leading one, so that stock and paperwork stay unambiguous. The EID is added as its own field, not as a replacement.
For buying and reselling, it is important that eSIM profiles are removed when changing hands or resetting a device, so that no foreign subscription remains on it. The EID itself is retained, as it belongs to the chip. A deleted profile does not make the device anonymous: through the unchanged IMEI, model assignment and status queries remain possible at any time. Anyone taking in eSIM devices should check and document the profile status without losing sight of the IMEI.
In conclusion, the eSIM moves the SIM from the card into the chip but changes nothing about the basic logic of identification. The IMEI identifies the device, the EID the built-in SIM chip, and the profile the network access. Keeping these three layers cleanly apart saves booking errors and wrong conclusions. For all common checks from model through blocklist to activation lock, the 15-digit IMEI remains the reliable anchor, no matter whether a physical SIM or an eSIM is installed.
