Deriving Model and Region: What the IMEI, Serial Number and Model Number Reveal

Which details can be read from the TAC, serial number and model number, and where the limits of that mapping lie.

A modern smartphone carries several codes at once, and each answers a different question. The IMEI identifies the individual device, the model number describes the variant, and the serial number is the manufacturer's own identifier. From these details you can derive the model and partly the intended sales region, though not with unlimited precision. This article shows which information sits in which code, how to read it, and where the mapping reaches its limits.

The starting point is the IMEI. Its first eight digits, the Type Allocation Code or TAC, are permanently assigned to a specific device type. Using the TAC database maintained by the GSMA, you can usually determine the manufacturer and model from it. One caveat is important: the TAC reveals the device type, not the sales region or the specific configuration such as storage size or colour. For a regional assignment you need additional details, above all the model number.

On Apple devices the regional information sits in the model or part number, which ends in a short code before the /A suffix. These letters mark the intended sales market. Well-known examples are LL/A for the USA, J/A for Japan, ZP/A for Hong Kong and X/A for Australia. Apple maintains the exact mapping itself, and it can change across model years, so when in doubt you should check a code against an official source rather than relying on memory.

In addition, every Apple device carries an A-number such as A2882. It denotes a specific hardware variant. A single market model can have several A-numbers, because the variants for different regions differ in the radio bands they support. The A-number is therefore a hint about the hardware variant and indirectly about the target region, but not a substitute for the full model number. For a robust assignment it is best to consider the A-number and model number together.

With serial numbers, caution is warranted. Older Apple serial numbers still encoded the manufacturing location, production period and configuration, but since 2021 Apple has largely issued random serial numbers without that meaning. So a manufacturing year can no longer be derived from a new serial number. On Android devices, by contrast, the model designation often helps: with Samsung, for instance, an appended B frequently stands for European models, U for US versions and N for the Korean market. Here too the conventions change and should be verified.

In practice the value of these codes lies in cross-checking them against one another. If the TAC, model number and the details on packaging and invoice all fit together, that supports authenticity. If they contradict each other, for example when the IMEI read via *#06# suggests a different device type than the printed label, that is a warning sign. You should not over-interpret the codes, though: a differing region code alone does not mean a device is problematic, it may simply be import stock.

In summary, each code delivers a piece of the puzzle: the IMEI's TAC leads to the device type, the model number to the sales region, the A-number to the hardware variant, and the serial number to the manufacturer's own identifier, though new Apple serials deliberately reveal nothing more. Assembling these pieces and comparing them against packaging and paperwork exposes discrepancies early. For binding statements about model, region and status, checking against official and current data sources remains the safest route.
